About UCity

University City has a unique character that can’t be found anywhere else in the St. Louis region.

Nicknamed UCity by locals, the area offers historic brick housing, stable subdivisions and a diverse population. UCity is home to many different ethnic groups and offers housing to meet the needs of working class, middle class and affluent families.

Located midway between downtown and the western suburbs, UCity offers a short commute to residents regardless of where they work. The proximity to Forest Park, Central West End, downtown Clayton and MetroLink light rail, gives residents ample opportunities to experience the best of St. Louis’ culture and entertainment.

But UCity residents don’t need to leave their city when they are ready to have fun.

Food, Shopping and More:

University City offers neighborhood restaurants and shops throughout the city within walking distance of many homes.

The two primary business districts, The Loop and UCity Olive Link, have distinct personalities and attract visitors from the entire region.

The Loop runs along Delmar Blvd. from the Lions at City Hall heading east, crossing into the St. Louis city limits. Lining the street are restaurants, shops, bowling, an independent film theater, nightlife, a new hotel and several live music venues.

The mix of people creates an energy seen nowhere else in the region.

During an evening stroll, you’ll likely run across suburban families dining at Fitz’s, Washington University students with their laptops and books at Meshuggah, vintage clothing and tattoo parlor shoppers along with young professionals hitting one of the many nightlife spots.

The UCity Olive Link has a completely different feel. Strip malls line Olive Blvd. offering a different Chinese restaurant every few feet. The Asian community has adopted this area to open grocery stores, stores and businesses serving both their own communities and anyone else interested in stopping by. Mixed into the developments are an assortment of businesses, thrift shops, a wide variety of ethnic restaurants and stores for the price-conscious shopper.

University City Housing:

The vast majority of homes in University City were built before 1960. While there are pockets of homes that offer choices in styles, most of the streets are lined with 2 story brick homes. Detached garages and small backyards are the norm for UCity homes. Homes with an attached garage are typically affordable 1960-1980s ranches or expensive infill homes built since 2000.

When were University City Homes built?

You will also find a number of streets with 2-4 family buildings providing rental housing in historic buildings. Additional rental opportunities lie in the large communities/buildings located near Delmar & 170, north of The Loop and along Olive Blvd.
