After many years of repeated flooding, 26 homeowners on Wilson Avenue have finally been approved for a FEMA buyout.

The KSDK.com report explains:
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved a $3 million disaster relief grant to help fund the buyout of 26 homes along Wilson Avenue between Shaftesbury and Midland.
The homes were always in danger of flooding during heavy rainfall
due to their proximity to River Des Peres. The deaths of Louise Bryant and Willie Johnson in September 2008 further fueled residents’ requests for a buyout.
The $3 million is part of a larger, $5.1 billion supplemental disaster relief grant approved by Congress last week. Those millions will front up to 75 percent of the total cost of the project, with University City covering the remaining funds.
Timelines and rules for the buyout will be coordinated by Missouri’s Emergency Management Agency and University City government. Once the homes are bought, they will be demolished.
If you are thinking about buying a home and want to avoid the headaches that have plagued the Wilson Avenue homeowners, make sure you check to see if the house is in a flood zone before you sign a contract.
