Sinclair Gas Station Sold

gas-pumpUniversity City is losing its full service gas station, Sinclair, located at the intersection of Delmar Blvd and Hanley Road.

The sale of the UCity location is part of a strategy change for Sinclair Oil Corp., which is getting out of the retail side of the petroleum business. With the sale of the remaining 13 company owned gas stations in Missouri to Western Oil, Sinclair will become another brand from the past in the St. Louis area.

I’m actually excited about this change.

Though I’m sure there are some people who still appreciate getting full service at a gas station, most of us would rather have a better stocked convenience store than a guy who will come out and clean your windshield while he fills the tank.

Soon to be rebranded ConocoPhillips, the new gas station should offer University City residents a choice between the new gas station and the Phillips 66 directly across the street.

As someone who drives over to the Phillips 66 when I run out of coffee (driving past a Starbucks) for a 75ยข cup of Ronoco coffee in my travel mug, I’m looking forward to another gas station option.

It’s quite a challenge to get out of the Phillips 66 lot at rush hour if you need to go westbound on Delmar. As long as the new ConocoPhillips station has quality coffee, you’ll see me supporting this new business.

I guess it’s time to go out and photograph some Sinclair signs for posterity. Thanks for the interesting piece.

Thanks for the info on the Sinclair station. I was running past it yesterday and noticed that the Sinclair name on the main sign was covered (though none of the rest were yet). I do want to point out that the station across the street is a Phillips. This will be interesting if they both are Phillips/Conoco. Kind of sounds like McDonalds or Walgreen’s real estate strategy “get your consumers coming and going”.

This map should show the street view of Delmar & Hanley.

Another sad story. This station was always a few cents cheaper than the one across the street. Now, I guess they will always be the same price. I wonder do they still perform all the normal garage services that they did when they were a Sinclair station?

The sign did change but it never got a Conoco or Phillips sign, so I’m not sure what ended up happening here. It does look like they still do full service and repairs.

I guess if all you care about is a cheap cup of coffee you’ll be happy
For the people in the neighborhood who have been going to Sinclair for years
it’s sad to see it go
The employees are very friendly – who wants to pump gas & pay more!

it would be a neighborhood disaster to see this sinclair go to another fast food gas station. the family busines in the service department has been repairing cars anr trucks for 3 genarations in the u city area’ the customers trust and depend on them every trip there. there a few firestones and a few independents near if you want to over pay for repairs, but if thes really happens its going to be a sad sad day in u city.
