According to an Associated Press story, a sinkhole was discovered on Sunday near Washington University and shut down traffic lanes on Big Bend.
The local Channel 4 Fox News station reported:
Many St. Louis-area commuters are being forced to find alternative routes after a huge sinkhole closed a busy intersection.
The southbound lanes of Big Bend Boulevard near Forest Park Parkway in University City were shut down Sunday because of the sinkhole, and crews aren’t sure when the road will reopen.
St. Louis County crews are still trying to figure out what caused the sinkhole, though one possibility is heavy rain that has hit the region over the past several days.
What is a Sinkhole?

A sinkhole forms when there is a hole without soil under the surface soil. If the hole gets large enough, then the soil above it can cave in, filling the hole and creating a sinkhole at the surface.
ThinkQuest library offers a great description and picture to illustrating how a sinkhole forms.
